Black Woman Press seeks to uphold the integrity of the author’s story through whatever literary genre it is shared.

The publishing business, like most businesses, has become a large corporation where only certain types of books are published and where authors are published in order to fit a current trend not to share a unique perspective and story.

Black Woman Press was founded in the spring of 2002 after Adia Blackmon attended a literary conference at Howard University. A well-known poet stood and began discussing his negotiations with a mainstream publisher. He spoke of how his work was going to be altered by the mainstream publisher into a book that was not his own in order to be marketed. BWP was created with the intention of allowing authors a safe place for their visions to develop rather than be changed to fit the vision of a company.

BWP is an independent publisher promoting wholeness and healing by giving voice to those stories that aren’t usually heard. We celebrate the universal story we all share while learning from the richness in our differences.

BWP is a publishing company that looks to grow with its authors and readers. We want to change the idea of an impenetrable publisher that is unaffected by the voices and needs of those it serves. BWP is a restorative space in which authors and readers can appreciate their own journeys as well as see the value in the lives of others.
